Forum Title: Earthquake Construction
The latest shaker in NZ has reminded me ...I've often heard that the 'seismic code requires ..." but I've never seen a copy of any 'seismic code.'Just what, exactly, is the 'seismic code,' and where do I find a copy?

Reno,For me, the most referenced "Code" regarding any Seismic Qualifications would be per the CBC; Title 24, Part 2-Volumes 1 and 2.(BTW, "CBC" = California Building Code). The Linked Site below has the CCR Title 24, Parts 1 through 12 available for On-Line viewing, or PDF Download... ... and at no charge!!! (read: "FREE!!!") CBC T24, Part 2, Vol. 1 Link-----}Title 24, Part 2, Vol. 1, 2010 California Building CodeOther AHJs / State's Codes, and more T24 Parts On Same Site -----}US Public Safety CodesAdditionally, Local California Departments of Building and Safety ("DBS") have Bulletins, Requirements, Handouts, etc. per Seismic Qualification.Lastly, Manufacturers, such as B-Line, have some good Information available for Download.Several Years back, I had to Compile an array of Seismic Designs and Calcs on a few Projects. These were for Electrical Installs, as well as Generator Pads, and similar "Smaller" Structural Elements.I downloaded as much as could be found!-- Scott

It's my experience that each juristdiction has their own method of writing their own "code" just like any other code, ordinance, regs, etc. For example, The IBC has a sceimic requirements and when a local JHA adopt's it, They can ammend to meet their requirements. Its just like snow loading or extreme hot and cold areas. I would imagine in some areas, they produce a centralize document. It varies
